When I heard about the wax vac I really wanted to try it. I am always looking for a quick and effective way to keep my ears clean. I was thrilled when the opportunity presented itself. I had high hopes that this would be one of those products that would be used and loved by the family.
When it arrived I was ready to be the guinea pig. I knew my ears were a little waxy. I placed the bottle of mineral oil in very warm water for 6 minutes and then I placed several drops in my right ear. I got comfy and allowed the oil to remain in my ear for 6 minutes. I then used the Wax Vac as directed. I felt like nothing was happening. I followed the directions as best I could but this thing flat out didn't work. In fact, it did the exact opposite of what it was supposed to do. It made the ear wax issue worse.
I thought maybe it was a fluke. Maybe I didn't do it right. I tried again. Using the mineral oil, which was as warm as I could stand it to be, I allowed it to stay in the ear a little longer, I tried the Wax Vac again. Again I had no results. I had to use a q tip to get the oil out of my ear. This made the wax impact into my ear. I went thru an entire process to remove the impacted wax in my ear after 2 uses with this ineffective product. I won't give you details on removing impacted wax as I am not a medical professional, however I will suggest you look this up on the Mayo Clinic site.
This led me to try another test. I took a tiny little sliver of notebook paper, you know the little stuff that comes off after tearing a piece of paper from a notebook? The Wax Vac didn't have the suction to lift a 1/4 inch of notebook paper. The paper didn't budge, not even a tiny bit. If this thing doesn't have the suction to life a sliver of notebook paper how in the world can it effectively suction and remove ear wax?!
I hate to write a negative review. I almost didn't write this one, but I have hopes that my brutally honest feedback can help make this product better. I feel that the idea behind the wax vac is fabulous but... the unit I was supplied with simply didn't have any suction to it.I honestly feel that this is a dangerous and ineffective product. The light has been handy however. It made a great impromptu flashlight during a power outage. Simply put, while the product idea is great, the product doesn't work as it is supposed to.

I usually use Q-tips, even though they are not good for you :( but my daughter and hubby get tons of wax built up and this sounds like a much gentler way to take care of it.
ReplyDeleteDon't bother. It won't work. I have been a Family Doc. for 40 years and have syringed thousands of ears. best thing is olive oil for a few days beforehand (better than mineral oil) and then gentle flushing with a medical ear syringe.
DeleteI was wondering about this when I saw the commercials. I'll wait til they fix the issues to try it.
ReplyDeleteUsually just use a washcloth but sometimes I do use a Q-tip.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this review! I've had sooo much trouble with my ears since my last pregnancy and I will now know not to spend money on this! I will stick to my q-tips for now!
ReplyDeleteI use q tips, my daughter has dirty ears and I wanted this until I read your review! Thanks for the honest review, saves me money :)
ReplyDeleteI use Q-Tips to keep my ears clean.
ReplyDeleteI was wondering how this worked since I saw it advertised on tv. I'm glad that you wrote the honest review! I wear a head set at work and my ears tend to get wax build up and moisture collects in the ear that the headset is on. I use Debrox ear wax removal drops along with flushing them with warm water afterwards. It really works!
ReplyDeleteI don't do much but occasionally use a Q-tip
ReplyDeleteI just use my finger or little kid q tips.
ReplyDeletea qtip or my finger
ReplyDeletei drain them with hot wax
ReplyDeleteA little Q-Tip very occasionally is all that's needed. This product sounds like the worst idea ever, a vacuum - to your ear; never!

I use Q-tips
ReplyDeleteI use Q-tips.
ReplyDeleteI use qtips even though I know you are not supposed to
ReplyDeleteI put several drops of peroxide in one ear and let it it for about 10-15 minutes, then let it drain and wipe with a wet washcloth. Then I repeat on the other side. I do the same with my 5 year old son's ears and we have the cleanest ears our doctor has ever seen! LOL
ReplyDeleteqtips and peroxide
ReplyDeleteA qtip and peroxide thing for many years. Love the commercials for the wax vac though. My daughter might like that for after swim team.
ReplyDeleteI candle my ears. :)
ReplyDeleteI candled for years then found out it doesn't work. When you are done and all the yellow stuff is inside you are like omg. Guess what? It is not what came out of your ear. It is the remains of the melted wax. We let one of our ear candles burn on a plate while hoding it up...Amazingly the same crud was still in the candle. Don't fall for that either!
DeleteThat does not work either! All of the yellow crud you see in the remaining candle is the debris from the melted wax. Just burn one down without it in your ear and it will amazingly still have the same yellow crud!!!

DeleteOnce a month I use a few drops of peroxide...let it sit a few minutes, drain and rinse with water....flushes any wax right out
ReplyDeleteI use q-tips. Bad me, lol. Thank you for this review!! My husband has been wanting to try this!
ReplyDeleteJust saw a commercial for this and my husband was all excited. I was skeptical and I'm glad I googled it and read your review and I will convince my husband not to buy it. Thanks and Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your review.I also read other reviews saying the wed site for this product did a bait and switch scam.Sounds like a product to stay away from
ReplyDeleteSara, you were right in that the Wax Vac has NO suction. Thankfully, I didn't have nearly the problems of some other purchasers, but paid the $23 for 2. It is very disappointing. I am going back to the old methods of flushing with warm water using the bulb syringe. Slightly messy (wet) but at least it gets the stubborn wax out.
ReplyDeleteRead another article about the WaxVac and it said if you tape the seal down that it works much better. I ordered one, have yet to receive it though. Will see what happens with the taped seal and report back.
ReplyDeleteI read another review that said if you tape the seal down it works much better. Ordered the product but haven't received it yet, will report back on how taping the seal works.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your honest review! My husband has been after me to order it but I'm glad I didn't now. The doctor recommended peroxide drops as one person commented. We had also heard about sweet oil softening the ear wax so you could flush it out with warm water, but I had trouble locating it. Our pharmacist said that a few drops of olive oil will do the same as sweet oil without having to buy a separate product.
ReplyDeleteMineral oil is the same time as sweet oil, I found it in Walgreen's

ReplyDeleteHas no one here used the ear wax candles? They definitely work and suction the junk out of your ear!
ReplyDeleteNevermind! Please disregard that last comment
ReplyDeleteI am a stupid victim for this NOTHING BUT TOY.
ReplyDeleteIt is regret for me to read any review about this product before ordering.
There are so many same scams like mine. Can I file a dispute with my credit card company?
THE BEST AND SAFEST WAY that the doctors treat our ears is:
NO Q-tip, USE wax removal drops such as Peroxide, Debrox
with holding more than 10 Min, along with flushing them with warm water afterwards.
I will use Q-tips and have never! injured my ear.
ReplyDeleteBUT I usually just use tissue rolled up tightly with clean hands and give it a twist as I insert it. IF it hits the eardrum, it's soft enough to simple bend and not poke.
works fine every time.
I heard the WAXVAC has to many air leaks. You have to use scotch tape to seal them up, so that there is enough suction to do the job.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter bought one and it did not do anything..............she sent it back.......somethings are not worth buying
ReplyDeleteHi Sara,
ReplyDeleteMy Dad bought a Wax Vac at one of those "As Seen On TV" stores. As you found out for yourself, it does absolutely nothing, except make noise. I had warned my Dad about the ineffectiveness of this product and implored him to read some of the reviews online (such as yours). But, nope, he's as stubborn as a mule and just had to buy one!
The only good thing is that he bought one for $10 instead of buying it through the TV infomercial (two Wax Vacs for $23)! I've read that the company that handles the online and TV sales are very scammy, as well. Lots of credit card fraud going on. So, that's another thing to be aware of.
Woah I think this would be effective, not sure, it's a hit or miss but looks like it'd work
